City Council Highlights for December 17th Regular Council Meeting

At the last Regular Council Meeting for 2024, held on December 17th, City Council approved a motion to declare a vacancy on Council following the resignation of Sam Johnston.
The Clerk will advise the Municipal Electoral Officer of the vacancy so a by-election can be held to fill the position.
The by-election will be held in May 2025.

City Council approved a motion to award the tender for Phase 1 of stormwater upgrades for Kerr Trailer Park to Vye Construction and Paving for $317,210.20. The first phase will include clearing and grubbing a wooded area, installing a storm sewer system, adding sediment and erosion control measures, and restoring the area. Phase 2 will include ditching, driveway and cross cover culvert replacement, and restoration work including asphalt patching, topsoil and hydroseed, driveways. Both phases will be completed on 2025.

City Council approved a motion to name the following to the new City Planning Review and Adjustment Committee (PRAC) effective January 1st, 2025. They are:

  • Bill Treadwell

  • Joe Veriker

  • Bethany Manderson

  • Shayan Faal

  • Kris Jardine

  • Whitney Henderson

City Council approved a motion to submit an application to the Municipal Capital Borrowing Board to borrow $3,690,000 for the following items for a term not to exceed 20 years. These items were recently approved in the 2025 budget:

  • Transportation Services - Storm Sewer Upgrades - $550,000 - 15 years

  • Protective Services - Fire Engine - $1,300,000 - 15 years

  • Recreation and Cultural Services - Building Roof Replacement - $800,000 - 20 years

  • Environmental Health Services - Sewage Pumping Lift Station - $390,000 - 20 years

  • Lagoon dredging and curtain replacement - $ 550,000 - 20 years

City Council approved motions for Inter-fund Transfers for 2024. They are:

  • Transfer $1,350,438 from the Operating Fund to the General Capital Reserve Fund

  • Transfer $650,562 from the General Operating Fund to the General Operating Reserve Fund

  • Transfer $107,000 from the Utility Operating Reserve Fund

By-Laws

By-laws to enable the redevelopment of the house and garage into an adult housing shelter on the properties located at 273 King George Highway were introduced and approved by council. A Public Hearing to hear objections will be held on February 19th, 2025 at the Beaverbrook Kin Centre at 6 p.m.
The by-law designating streets accessible to all-terrain vehicles was approved with an amendment by City Council and read for a third time. The Clerk will advise Council when the Department of Justice and Public Safety authorizes the by-law.
