Naming Policy for Streets & Civic Facilities

The City of Miramichi has adopted a naming policy designed to celebrate the city’s rich history and heritage. This policy establishes a Name Bank—a collection of names that reflect Miramichi’s historical, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic identity. View full policy HERE.

Developers will be encouraged to use the Name Bank when naming new streets and civic facilities, ensuring that Miramichi’s past is honored in future developments.

Submit a Name

Residents are invited to submit name suggestions for streets and civic facilities. Submissions should follow these general guidelines:

Naming Criteria

  • Uniqueness: Names must not duplicate existing street or facility names, especially those within areas covered by local emergency response services (E911).

  • Distinctiveness: Names that sound too similar to existing ones should be avoided to prevent confusion.

  • Continuity: Streets that run continuously should have one consistent name along their entire length.

Heritage & Community Significance

Submitted names should align with at least one of the following themes:

  • Honouring a noteworthy person or group with historical ties to Miramichi.

  • Recognizing a citizen or organization that made a significant contribution to the city.

  • Highlighting historical events or places significant to Miramichi, New Brunswick, or Canada, including the city’s location on traditional Mi’kmaq lands.

  • Showcasing Miramichi’s wildlife, flora, or natural features.

  • Commemorating Miramichiers who served in the Canadian military.

Review & Selection Process

Names selected for the Name Bank will be balanced to reflect Miramichi’s diverse cultural, ethnic, and linguistic heritage. Please note that names of living individuals will only be considered in exceptional cases.

Submissions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. City staff will evaluate suggestions and submit eligible names to City Council for final approval. The Name Bank will be regularly updated to meet future naming needs.

Please Note: Submissions are suggestions only. While all names will be reviewed, there is no guarantee of selection. The City will not contact individuals regarding the status of their submission.
