City Council amends Sunday shopping by-law

Miramichi City Council has amended the by-law relating to Sunday shopping in the municipality to now allow retailers to select their own hours of operation.
By-law No. 74-1 was read a second and third time at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, before being passed unanimously by council.
The amended by-law was effective immediately. This means retailers located in the City of Miramichi are now permitted to set the hours of operation when, and if, they open on Sunday.
The request to amend By-law No. 74 was made by the Retail Council of Canada and Greater Miramichi Chamber of Commerce. Both of the city’s business improvement areas, the Downtown Newcastle Business District and Historic Chatham Business District were supportive of the request.
Public feedback was received through an online survey and a request for additional feedback. The majority were in favour of the amendment.
