Update on Newcastle Water System Upgrades project – September 2024

Due to uncontrollable circumstances, Phases 8 and 9 of the Newcastle Water System Upgrades project for Newcastle Boulevard will be postponed until the 2025 construction season.

Delays with approvals and supply issues for necessary mechanical components for Phases 5B and 6, and Phase 7 have impacted the schedule set by the City’s Engineering and Public Works Departments.  Following a review by both departments, it was determined the time frame to complete the Phase 8 and 9 work during the 2024 construction season was not possible or feasible.

The work on Phases 8 and 9 will begin in early Spring 2025. It will consist of new sanitary sewer installations, modifications to the water main, curb, sidewalk, paving the street from Gladstone to the old reservoir. The work will also include the removal of the existing reservoir and restoration of the site. The tender was awarded to North Shore Construction, and the anticipated timeline is 10 to 12 weeks to complete the project.

Phases 5B and 6, and Phase 7 will be completed during the 2024 construction season. These phases consist of a new control building and transmission line under the CN Railway, and construction of a new water tower, respectively.

The new water tower, located off Hansen Road, was built as part of the Newcastle Water System Upgrades project.
