Mayor’s visit to Carpiquet strengthens twinning commitment
During a recent visit to Carpiquet, France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Mayor Adam Lordon had the opportunity to meet with the Mayor Pascal Serard to discuss future plans and projects related to the twinning of the two communities.
”This is about building a relationship with a community we have a shared history with,” Lordon said.
The two mayors announced their intention to develop joint projects during a banquet held for the Anglophone North School Districts North Shore Legacy Tour.
Over 300 students, family members, and chaperones took part in a 12-day trip to follow the footsteps of the North Shore Regiment as they visited battlefields and towns they helped liberate. The contingent joined Lordon in Carpiquet for a day of commemorative ceremonies on June 5th that they participated in.
On the anniversary of D-Day, June 6th, the group took part in a sunrise ceremony on Nan Red beach which include the placement of 270 crosses with the names of the members of the North Shore Regiment who lost their lives in Normandy at the edge of the water. This was followed by an official commemoration ceremony in St. Aubin with representatives from all allied nations and around the world.
At the official signing of the twinning agreement two years ago, on July 4, 2022, it was recognized there was a shared history and the communities would continue to build and strengthen the historical, social, and cultural ties between the two.
This date is significant as it is the date the Battle of Carpiquet began in 1944 and continued for six days.
The twinning projects will include a focus on youth which could include exchange trips, letter writing exchanges, sport exchange trips and more.
“We will continue to build on our past to create opportunities for the future,” Lordon said.
The mayor also extended an official invitation for Serard and his council to visit Miramichi.
