City Council Highlights for July 2024

Miramichi City Council held a Regular Council Meeting on July 16th, 2024. Minutes from the following meetings were approved:

New Business

City Council approved a motion to contribute $20,000 to the Miramichi Filipino Association for the 2024 Fiesta Extravaganza.

City Council approved a motion to authorize the execution of transfer documents for lands located between Lawlor Lane and Beaverbrook Road.

By-laws

City council approved the motions for the first reading to rezone a property, PID 40314056 on Hill Street from “Residential Low Density (R-2)” to “Medium Density (R-4)” to better facilitate the future development of multi-unit housing. A public hearing will be held on August 27th at 6 p.m. for consideration of any objections to the proposed rezoning.

July 2nd Special Council Meeting and Council in Committee

City Council approved a motion to resurface 2.8 kilometres of Island View Drive from Nelson Street to the CN railway overpass as part of the Municipal Highway Partnership Program. The cost of the project is $900,000 with the provincial government paying $675,000 and city’s portion of $225,00 will come from the Canada Community Building Fund allocation.

City Council approved a motion to appoint Logan Dunfield as a By-Law Enforcement Officer for the City of Miramichi.

City Council approved a motion to accept the tender bid from Miramichi Honda to lease four midsize sedan vehicles at a cost of $714.93 per month for a period of 36 months from September 4, 2024 to September 4, 2027.

City Council was advised for the Southern Spine, the eastern portion of the spine (from the railroad tracks crossing on Water Street to Kelly Road) will be constructed this year as budgeted in the 2024 Capital Budget.

By-laws

City council approved the motions for the first reading to rezone a property, PID 40543761 on Howard Street from “Institutional” to “Mixed Use” to better facilitate the future development of multi-unit housing prior to the sale to developers or other groups. A public hearing will be held on September 3rd at 6 p.m. for consideration of any objections to the proposed rezoning.

City council approved the motions for the first reading to rezone a property, PID 40458812 on John Street from “Recreation and Greenspace” to “Mixed Use” to better facilitate the future development of multi-unit housing prior to the sale to developers or other groups. A public hearing will be held on September 3rd at 6:10 p.m. for consideration of any objections to the proposed rezoning.

City Council approved the first reading of the draft By-law 74-1, a By-law to Amend By-law No. 74 Relating to Sunday Shopping in the Municipality.
The second and third reading of the By-law will take place at the next Regular Council Meeting on Tuesday, August 13th, 2024, at 6 p.m.
