Fireworks Safety Survey Results

The City of Miramichi asked residents to take part in a Fireworks Safety Survey in February 2025. The results of the survey were presented to City Council at a Committee in Council meeting on March 11th, 2025.

Here are some of the results:

  • 87% said they attended public fireworks in the last year.

  • 43% said they never attended private fireworks and 57% said they did.

  • 69% said they never set off private fireworks and 31% did.

  • 67% said they strongly agree that they enjoy attending a public fireworks display and 10% said they didn’t.

  • 54% agreed they enjoy attending private or household fireworks, 23% didn’t agree or disagree and 23% said they didn’t enjoy attending private or household fireworks.

  • 87% agreed public fireworks displays are safe.

  • 61% agreed private or household fireworks displays are safe. 39% disagreed.

  • 84% agreed fireworks are a good way to celebrate various occasions. 9% disagreed.

  • 73% disagreed that fireworks are disruptive to the community while 14% agreed they were.

  • 87% agreed fireworks bring people together.

  • 54% disagreed fireworks were bad for the environment. 30% didn’t agree or disagree and 16% agreed.

  • Many agreed fireworks were a benefit to the community in many ways for celebrations, benefit to the local economy, a tradition, etc. Others had concerns that fireworks affected people with PTSD, caused distress to animals, public nuisance, risk of fire, etc.

  • 99% (1052) had never made a complaint to the city about fireworks. 1% (16) had.

  • 36% supported adding new regulations to improve fireworks safety, 27% opposed and 37% neither supported or opposed.

  • Reducing the number of days or limiting the hours when fireworks could be set off was strongly opposed.

  • 61% opposed reducing the number of days when fireworks could be sold while 17% supported it.

  • 60% opposed requiring a permit to set off private or household fireworks.

  • 48% support providing more education of using fireworks safely while 21% opposed.

  • 42% supported having vendors require more education to sell fireworks while 26% opposed it.

  • 69% opposed the complete ban on the sale of fireworks to improve fireworks safety.

  • 66% opposed the complete ban of private or household fireworks to improve fireworks safety. 20% were in support.
