Update on uni-directional flushing in the Newcastle Water System

The City of Miramichi Public Works Department started unidirectional flushing in the Newcastle Water System on Saturday, April 20, 2024 and will continue to Friday April 26, 2024.
As of today, Monday, April 22, 2024, 41 of the 105 sequences have been completed.
Flushing has been discoloured at first, but the zones have been cleaning up quickly.
Zone 1 to 7 on the list below are completed to date. The flushing pattern is as follows:

1) Miramichi Valley High School
2) Beaver Brook Road
3) Newcastle Boulevard from Cross Road to Mckenna Avenue
4) McKenna Avenue to High Plain Crescent area
5) David, Stothart, Flynn, Gerald Streets
6) Sunnyside Avenue
7) McKenna Avenue to Grandview Avenue

Remaining areas to be flushed are:

8) Lawlor Lane area and mini home park
9) Hillside Drive
10) East side of Newcastle Boulevard, Aitken Ave, Kingston area
11) Old King George Highway including a portion of King George Highway
12) Adams Ave area, Harkin area.

The flushing pattern identifies just the main streets, but all streets will be flushed in the area (zone).
Flushing starts at the water tower behind Miramichi Valley High School and crews work their way into the water system. This method allows clean water to be brought forward to each zone. The time frame to complete a zone is hard to predict as the time required to clear the water will vary. Some minor adjustment to the plan may be required if unforeseen issues occur. There will be updates as the flushing progresses.

Residences will experience dirty water at first and the frequency will reduce as the flushing is completed in the area and as the crews advance forward.
Dirty water is unpredictable so during the flushing please be aware of during the flushing hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
It is recommended that laundry should be done after the flushing hours. Please check water quality prior to ensure the water is clear.
During the flushing in your area please minimize the use of hot water any sediment will remain in the hot water tank and the tank will require to be flushed to clear.
When water is restored, it is recommended to clean the screen in your taps.
Once flushing is completed run your tub cold water only to clear any remaining discolouration for 3 to 5 minutes.
For any questions or concerns, please contact the Public Works Department at 506-623-2020 or the After Hours Line at 506-623-2241. Issues can also be reported here.
