Full and Part-Time Members

Full and part-time members (except for the Fire Chief and Administrative Assistant) are members of Miramichi Professional Firefighters Association.

The full-time members work two, ten hour day shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and two, fourteen hour night shifts from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. These four shifts equate to a forty-eight hour work week. Immediately following these four shifts, the firefighters have four days off.

Part-time members are also called upon to cover shifts as required.

If you want to help people, work with a great team and you are physically fit, then you may be an ideal candidate for a career with the City of Miramichi Fire Department. Candidates must possess a valid Class 3 driving license with air brake endorsement and have post-secondary education/training as a firefighter from a recognized community college or pre-employment school with the following certification:  NFPA 472 HazMat Awareness and Operations, NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II, Auto Extrication, First Aid and CPR Level C with AED endorsement and W.H.M.I.S.

A career in the fire service is both challenging and rewarding.

Volunteers

As mentioned on our main web page, we are a composite department which means that we provide fire and emergency services with career and volunteer members. Just like our career members, the volunteer complement is an essential part of providing service to the public. Volunteer members supplement our response in all three stations in the City of Miramichi.

The volunteers in every station meet every other week for training and once per month for a group Firefighters’ Association meeting.

All new volunteers will be instructed to and must successfully complete courses in Firefighter Level I, Workplace First Aid with CPR Level ‘C,’ Auto Extrication, Hazardous Materials Awareness and WHMIS. All training is provided without course costs to the member by the New Brunswick Community College and/or City of Miramichi Fire Department Instructors.

Volunteers receive an annual honorarium paid twice per year as well as remuneration for out of city emergency response calls.

Interested individuals can apply for a volunteer firefighter position by completing the City of Miramichi Volunteer Firefighter Application Form and delivering it to Fire Department headquarters located at 94 General Manson Way, Unit 6, Miramichi, NB, E1N 6K8.  The application will remain on file until the next volunteer recruitment process.
